Lots of Socks

Bath’s unique 3 Cafe Kitchen is collecting #Lotsofsocks – knitted socks, sock cookies and plenty of odd socks to mark World Down Syndrome Day on Wednesday 21 March 2018. The odd sock theme represents the extra chromosome, chromosome 21 which all those with Down Syndrome are born with. If you can knit, felt or crochet please find the simple sock pattern on their Facebook and Instagram page @3CafeKitchen and pop in or send them your contributions before 21st March.

3 Cafe Kitchen was created by Threeways Special School in Bath and has been specifically designed to give young people with Down Syndrome and other special needs an opportunity to train and work. The Café has been warmly embraced by the local community and serves cakes, coffees, breakfasts and lunches.

On World Down Syndrome Day, there is a call out to every person with Down syndrome to tell the world what they bring to their community using the hashtags #WhatIBringToMyCommunity #WDSD18. 3 Cafe Kitchen aims to showcase how those with a disability can excel in the work place and become active citizens within the community. The Café itself is an innovative example of best practice, showing how just how capable young people are in the workplace and how the Bath community is embracing this.

Jo Stoaling, Head Teacher at Threeways says:

‘We have been overwhelmed by the support of the community in fundraising and supporting the Café in our first nine months of operation. What the young people have gained from working in the Café, serving customers, preparing food and being part of the team is immeasurable. We want to develop more partnerships with local employers to enable our students to move on to employment and training and to show the community how much they are able to contribute. It’s our turn to give something back now with #WDSD18 and we hope everyone will get behind us once again’

Paul and Marie Ashman, Parents at Three Ways School say ‘Knowing that Josh is getting real experience and is gaining so many social skills and life skills from working at 3 Café Kitchen is wonderful. We love having a place to meet and get great coffee and cake at school and watching Josh being so proud of working and chatting to customers is such a precious opportunity.’

Visit the café on 21st March with your odd socks, have an odd sock cookie and make your donations towards #WDSD18. Don’t forget to share your tweets and photos showing #lotsofsocks.

Please send any completed socks to :
