Stitched Together: Knitting Pretty, North Yorkshire
We caught up with Diane of Knitting Pretty in North Yorkshire, to find out more about what goes into running a yarn business!
What’s your shop called? Is there a story behind the name?
The name came about in my last job. I used to knit for my colleagues, we joked I should get a wool shop and started brainstorming names for our pretend shop. There were two winners, Knitting Pretty won the title – but ‘Wool Upon a Time’ was a close second!
Where is your shop and what is the neighbourhood like?
Knitting Pretty is on Castlegate, Knaresborough. We have some beautiful independent retailers on Castlegate and the amazing Art in the Mill just around the corner. Knaresborough was recently voted the number 1 best town to visit in Britain by The Guardian. The view from the castle over the viaduct is breathtaking.
Who works at your shop?
Just lil ol’ me, though I have wonderful friends who will help out!
What makes your shop special?
It’s very much the social hub for crafters! Customers have as much pride in Knitting Pretty as I do, and my window display is always fabulous thanks to Lynsey and Kt – just two of the customers that have become dear friends.
What are your most popular yarns?
At the moment it’s all about West Yorkshire Spinners! The Opal sock yarn is also very popular, we have both 4ply and 6ply. We also sell Debbie Bliss, Crazy Zauberballe, King Cole, Stylecraft, Rico Designs, James Brett, Knit Pro, Clover, Vanessa Bee Designs and Herdy.
Do you have a knitting group? When do they meet?
We have knitting groups in the shop Tuesdays, Friday’s and Saturday’s and another Knit n Natter in the local Cafe Nero on Wednesdays.
What’s your favourite piece of knitting advice?
Learn how to seam using Mattress Stitch – it is invaluable!
