The Categories

Charity Hero

We were blown away by the amazing achievements of our prize-winning charity knitters last year so we had to keep this category. But we know they were just the tip of the iceberg and we continue to hear amazing stories about good work done by knitters all over the country. If you, or someone you know, has done some brilliant woolly charity work, we want to hear about it!

To enter yourself or nominate a friend, simply fill in this form.

Designer of the Year

The designer category was the most popular in last year’s competition, so we’ve expanded it to two categories this year! This first category is open to anyone who creates their own patterns. If you’re an experienced designer, this is your opportunity to get really creative! For this category, you will need to put yourself forward – you can’t nominate a friend.

We’re inviting you to create a mood board on a theme which inspires you, and come up with an idea for an adult garment pattern which fits in with the theme. Five designers will have their pattern featured in Knit Now, for which they will each be paid £400. Their mood board will also be used as the inspiration for the collecton in that issue!

For an idea of what your mood boards might include, take a look at these, which are the mood boards for previous collections which have featured in Knit Now.

A Midsummer Knit’s Dream :: Nautical Knits :: Celtic Inspirations :: Bloomsbury

To enter, first create your submission as a PDF file, and save it as “yourname_koty2016.pdf”. Your mood board should either be included in your submission file or linked to from it. If you need help understanding how to put together a submission, check out this Knit Now blog post

New Designer of the Year

new designer

If you’re an aspiring or beginner designer, or if you ever improvise your own knits, this category is for you! To be eligible for this category you must, at the time you enter, have had fewer than five designs published. Again, naturally, you can’t nominate someone else for this category, you have to put yourself forward.

We’re asking you to create a pattern which can be knitted using no more than 100g of Sirdar, Sublime or Hayfield yarn. This can be any kind of pattern – accessories, homewares, toys and baby knits are all equally welcome. Five winning designers will have their pattern published in Knit Now, for which they will each be paid £100.

You can either just do a swatch and a sketch and create a PDF submission as explained above, or you can knit the whole thing and upload a photo of the finished item. You don’t necessarily need to use Sirdar, Sublime or Hayfield yarn for your swatch or prototype, but if you don’t, you will need to suggest one of these yarns to use and if you win, you will have to re-knit it in the appropriate yarn.

Local Superstar

local superstar

We’ve introduced this category as part of the Stitched Together campaign celebrating local knitting shops and their communities. We want to find people doing brilliant things in their knitting community – whether that’s shop owners, teachers or event organisers. The people most deserving of recognition are often too busy to put themselves forward, so feel free to nominate someone you think deserves this!

Online Innovator

online innovator

This category is open to bloggers, vloggers, podcasters and anyone else who spreads their love of knitting over the World Wide Web. We’d love to hear about (or hear from) online knitters who are telling brilliant stories and really engaging with their audience. If an online knitting enthusiast keeps you coming back for more, put them forward for this award!

Spread the Word

We know knitters are creative, kind, innovative, generous and multitalented – but sometimes we don’t want to toot our own horns. If you have a friend who you think should enter the competition, show them this page and encourage them to put themselves forward – or nominate them yourself!

Terms and conditions

Competition is open to UK residents only. No purchase necessary. Grand prize does not include travel or accomodation. Winning designs will be published according to the standard Knit Now contributor agreement, which grants Knit Now first and exclusive publication rights for four months following publication. Closing date Midnight GMT, 31st December 2016. Winners will be notified by the end of January. The judges’ decision is final.
