Stitched Together: Stash Fine Yarns, Bradford

We caught up with Steph of Stash Fine Yarns in Bradford, to find out more about what goes into running a yarn business!

What’s your shop called? Is there a story behind the name?
Stash Fine Yarns - we are a family run, independent mill shop. The shop was originally in Chester but we moved to West Yorkshire at the end of 2015 bringing the name and the yarn with us!

Where is your shop and what is the neighbourhood like?
We are located in Thornton – best known as being the birthplace of the Bronte sisters. We are right on the doorstep of Bronte country, with the famous Haworth cobbles just a couple of miles away over the hill. We’re not far from Halifax either, with its impressive Piece Hall and its woolly and textile heritage.

Who works at your shop?
I’m always around and about stocking shelves and making tea! Josie, our most experienced knitter, is on hand a couple of days a week to share her knitting knowledge. We are a small but dedicated team!

What makes your shop special?
A warm Yorkshire welcome awaits everyone who comes in. Whether it’s to peruse our patterns or search for that perfect shade, we are always on hand to help!

What are your most popular yarns?
That’s tough - we sell a whole range of yarns, from the affordable and practical to the luxurious. Our clearance "barn” is always popular. We have some great pack bargains as well as end of lines which are always tempting!

Do you have a knitting group? When do they meet?
We run a series of workshops – our Tunisian Crochet classes last year were very popular! We’ve branched out this year and will be hosting a series of weaving classes with a local artist, our first two of which have already sold out! It’s been interesting to see our yarns used in such a different way.

What’s your favourite piece of knitting advice?
Josie and I have spent quite a while debating this one. Over the years we’ve received a lot of advice (and given some too) but I think we both agreed that reading your pattern thoroughly at the very beginning is a simple, but very useful piece of advice.
